Winter (December to March): skiing and alpine atmosphere
The prime season for both Chamonix and Zermatt. Ski areas are at their best, the resort atmosphere lively — but it's also the priciest and busiest period. Book your driver several weeks ahead for Christmas and February holidays, availability fills up fast.
Summer (June to September): hiking and open spaces
An underrated but beautiful period: cable cars open for glacier and viewpoint access (Aiguille du Midi, Gornergrat), hiking, fewer crowds than winter, and generally softer prices. Mont Blanc and the Matterhorn remain visible and impressive even without snow at valley level.
Spring and autumn: best value
Quiet periods for tourism — some shops and lifts close between seasons (check opening dates before you go), but it's the best time to enjoy the scenery without crowds, at more accessible prices.
